Back to School:
A Word from the Superintendent

Dear Clarendon School District One Family:

All the phrases you may have heard about the global pandemic and constant changes certainly define the time we live. Since face-to-face instructional learning was suspended in March, the roadmap for operating a district has evolved and has been impacted by disruptions,  changes, reflections, and refocusing.

Clarendon One will begin the year with a new roadmap for operating. Traditionally, we will start the school year by welcoming our students to shining waxed floors and hallways, newly decorated learning boards, and carefully arranged desks. This year, in my many decades as an educator, this will not be the case.

As you may be aware, school districts are required to offer choices on the instructional delivery models. After much discussion and careful consideration of what is approach will ensure the health and safety of our students, our students will continue with online learning. This instructional model is the most prudent choice.

We will continue online synchronous (live) learning in core content areas for the first nine weeks. Effective August 17, 2020; the first official day of school, our students will not report to any school campuses. Instead, virtual classes will be the only available option for the first 45 days. Ninth graders will report to campus on August 17th and 18th for initial assessments. They  will begin online instruction August 19th.

During the midpoint of the nine-weeks, the leadership team will assess the continuation and effectiveness of our eLearning initiative. Further, the leadership team and Board of Trustees will continue to monitor and receive guidance from all appropriate agencies and officials. When there is a significant decrease in the transmission rate of the virus, another instructional model will be suggested and provided.

Please know that I am aware of some parents' and families' desire for one of the other options listed on the surveys mailed and posted. However, given the increasing infectious and highly transmissible rate of COVD-19, virtual learning is the safest method of protecting our students and employees at this stage in the pandemic crisis. As stated earlier, there is one certainty in this period of the pandemic- changes. We will continue to adapt in an appropriate manner to any disruption or  changes in our educational system.

If you have any questions, would like to voice your concerns, or perhaps have a suggestion, do not hesitate to call your child's principal or me. My philosophical belief has and will continue to be; all actions taken should always be in the best interest of our students.

I encourage you to check the district's and schools' websites for current information or posting. Together, we will live out our historical legacy- equity, equality, and empowerment for children and families. Continue to be safe.

Always an Eagle,

Barbara R. Champagne
Superintendent
